Review:
Talk about an appropriate title. This is a collection of 11 short stories directed by indie faithful Jim Jarmusch (Strangers in Paradise, Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai), which were removed in the last 18 years, all of which involve two or more characters just sitting at a table, chatting via ... yes, coffee and cigarettes. In the hands of a lesser director, which can be extremely annoying, but Jarmusch is a master of subtle understatement and a great deadpan humor. This can be one of the funniest movies you've seen, where nobody gives a smile. Almost all the actors play themselves, which adds a meta-theatrical, slightly surreal touch to everything. Among my favorite stories, which tend to over-Alfred Molina has a surprise coldly arrogant guy actor Steve Coogan and large, in which Cate Blanchett plays herself and her jealous cousin Shelby. Then there's one where Tom Waits and Iggy Pop are in a dive bar to discuss things and Smoke (to celebrate the cessation of smoking), Jack and Meg White of the White Stripes experimenting with Tesla coils, and cast funny, RZA and GZA of the Wu-Tang Clan to share some downtime, of all people, Bill Murray. I also like the one with Spike Lees twin brothers and sisters, Joy and Cinque, dealing with invasive waiter (hilarious Steve Buscemi). Almost all the stories are great, but there are three that are very forgettable and completely unnecessary, and theyre all in a row, which interrupts the flow of the film. If these three men were taken out, Coffee and cigarettes, would be almost perfect, but still very good. And three out of the way in the first half, anyway. In the first hour of the film feels much the same way as fun. With a serious look, deadpan, B & W, as well as comedy Strangers in paradise. But as it happens, and the strange connections are made between the stories, it seems, suddenly fabulous depth. The final story, in particular, where the two old men in a dark room (Bill Rice and Taylor Mead) discuss-and-coffee-break life, he feels Itll last forever, has a sensaçã the distinct Waiting for Godot, and the film ends with a perfect score, haunting, existential sadness. It was then that I realized that I had just watched the line of funny stories, but humorous storyline, which says a lot about human nature and life in general. And if that is not enough interest, one begins to see how many times you Tom Waits and Iggy Pop talk? Or, RZA, GZA, and Bill Murray?
